My Beauty Finds

Curly Girl Method isn’t one-size-fits-all–and that’s the beauty of It

When I first heard about the Curly Girl Method (CGM), I wasn’t sure what to think. I grew up unhappy with my natural waves and my hair in general. When I started working and am able to afford it, I always had my hair rebonded at least once a year—because, well, that’s just what you did if you wanted to “look polished.” Sleek, long hair used to be the standard but times have changed and I started seeing a lot of women on social media showcasing their beautiful curls and sharing CGM tips. I realized I was fighting my hair instead of embracing it. But I’ve been doing it for so long and I was skeptical on whether it could work for me, too.

So then I dove headfirst into this world of conditioners, gels, diffusers, and “plopping” (yes, that’s an actual word in curly hair land). And honestly? It has completely changed how I feel about my hair—and myself.

So, what is the Curly Girl Method?

The Curly Girl Method was popularized by hairstylist Lorraine Massey in her book Curly Girl: The Handbook. At its core, it’s about avoiding harsh sulfates, silicones, and heat styling—things that strip curls of their natural oils and cause frizz. Instead, CGM encourages gentle cleansing, lots of moisture, and curl-friendly styling techniques.

The basics usually look like this:

  • No sulfates, silicones, or parabens (check your labels!)
  • Co-washing or gentle shampoos instead of harsh cleansers
  • Condition, condition, condition (because curls are naturally drier)
  • Dry without friction (think diffusers or air dry instead of towel-rubbing)
  • Style with curl-friendly products to lock in moisture and definition

It sounds simple, but here’s the kicker—what works for one curly girl might not work for another.

Trial and error (and why you shouldn’t give up)

I’ll be honest: I didn’t get perfect curls overnight. Some days my hair made me look like a goddess, and other days… it looked like I’d just come out of the rain.

That’s the thing about CGM—you really have to experiment. Different curl types (wavy, coily, kinky, spiraled), different climates (hello, Manila humidity), and even different lifestyles all affect what works best.

I’ve switched products a few times over the past several months, sometimes because of availability and sometimes for sustainability reasons, but the important thing is that I kept going. If I had given up after the first few “bad hair days,” I never would have found the routine that makes me actually love my curls now.

So if you’re trying this, my advice is: don’t quit too early. Your curls are unique, and it takes patience to figure out their love language.

My curly girl routine (aka what finally works for me)

After a lot of experimenting, here’s my current lineup. These products are what I personally love using right now, but like I said—I’ve made some switches along the way, and I’m sure I’ll make more in the future.

Wash days (2–3x a week)
I use Human Nature Organic Shampoo and Conditioner in lavender. I love the scent, how gentle it feels, and that it’s locally available here in the Philippines.

Clarifying (1x a week)
To remove buildup, I go for Human Nature Clarifying Shampoo once a week. It helps my hair breathe again and I could really feel the difference as if my curls are bouncier and my head feels a lot lighter after use.

Deep moisture (1x a week)
I tried Tresseme, Cream Silk, and other hair mask brands but then I discovered Shea butter masks and this has been a major game-changer for my routine. It’s a little expensive compared to other masks but there’s a reason for it.

Leave-in conditioner (every wash)
Cantu Leave-In Conditioner is my ride-or-die. My curls just drink it up. I apply it lightly right after I step out of the shower. A tub lasts a long time.

Oils before washing
I like to oil my hair before wash day—either coconut oil or lavender oil. It’s like a pre-treatment for my scalp.

Drying
I either air dry (low effort days) or use a diffuser (when I want more defined curls).

Styling
I keep it simple with Beachborn Hair Goop and Sea Salt Spray. They help give my curls hold and that beachy vibe.

Finishing touch
Right before my hair is fully dry, I apply a little Morocco Argan Oil serum to lock in shine.

Extra little tips from me

  • Scalp massage FTW – I use a silicone scalp massager while conditioning. Feels sooo good and boosts circulation.
  • Detangle wet, never dry – I only comb my hair while it’s wet and slippery with conditioner or hair mask. Once it’s dry, I just leave it alone—no brushing allowed!

Final thoughts

The Curly Girl Method isn’t just a “hair routine” for me anymore—it’s become a form of self-care. I no longer see my curls as something to “fix” but something to nurture.

To my fellow Filipinas (and anyone curious), I just want to say: don’t give up too soon. The trial-and-error phase is real, but once you find your groove, it feels so liberating to finally love your natural curls.

So, have you tried the Curly Girl Method? Are you thinking about it? Share your curl journey with me—I’d love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for you!
